Happily Married

This morning when a friend asked me if I was happy, I realized that I haven’t really been sad in a long time. Sure, I’ve felt a lot of negative emotions—tired, drained, frustrated, stressed out, burned out, discouraged, unappreciated, tired, tired, tired—but looking back, sadness is not one of them.

Whatever my circumstances are, I’ve found that there’s this inner joy and peace that’s taken residence in my heart. And that’s saying a lot because if you knew me when I was younger, you know how my over-thinking would often end up in sudden bouts of depression. More so, if you followed my blog when I was younger, you know that I blogged a lot about my frustrations and self-inflicted loneliness too.

But something about getting married changed that side of me.

You see, I happened to have married a very happy person. :)

Sure, David can be too happy sometimes it drains all the energy out of me lol. But mostly his very optimistic and happy disposition in life is so contagious it balances out my melancholy side. I don’t take for granted how our personalities balance each other out in so many ways; and how, rather than feeling “stuck” in a long-term commitment, I feel like I’ve become a better, less uptight, and happier version of myself.

I know for a fact that the thought of marriage sometimes makes single and independent women worry about losing their freedom and flexibility. I should know, I was a single person not too long ago. I know how it feels, not wanting to lose control of your schedule, your plans, your dreams.

You want to be able to do what you want to do, go where we want to go, and not feel “stuck” in one place. You want to be free to hop from one job to another and search for that one thing that will make you happy. You want to experiment, to try and fail, and then try again. And yes, singlehood does give you all of that freedom.

But in the past 6 months, I realized that there’s also this whole new level of freedom that comes with having someone to make decisions with and, in most cases, allowing him to take the lead. It’s mind blowing for a woman and a control-freak (yes, me) to allow another human being to not just have an opinion in your life but, whose own life has be factored into your decision-making.

Being a wife now, I find myself appreciating more and more this beautiful gift of marriage that God has so profoundly designed. More importantly, I find myself learning (little by little, each day) to let go and to trust more.

I happened to be given the opportunity the past two weeks to share what God has taught me about marriagefirst to a bunch of young people in church, and last weekend to a group of young single ladies. It’s a humbling (and funny) experience to talk about marriage and be questioned about my, lol, credibility. You’re married? You’re 28? You look 18! Some young ladies approached me even to personally ask me, “Ate, 28 ka na talaga?”

Hey, I may look 10 years younger,  and I may not have years of experience being a married person just yet, but what I do know about marriage holds true whether you’re married for 6 months or 50 years: marriage is the illustration of God’s love for the church (Ephesians 5:21-33).

It’s a tough call to live by, but it’s the very reason why marriage makes sense, why it’s worth all the shenanigans that come with it, and why you, singles out there, shouldn’t sell yourself short.

I’ve been thinking a lot about these lately and I’m overwhelmed at what God is teaching me.

I caught the Jeremy Lin fever

And for me it isn’t about the New York Knicks or the NBA. I stopped watching NBA when Jordan, Pippen and Rodman disbanded, and Penny Hardaway stopped playing for Orlando. (Meh, that just made me feel old.) I never rooted for any NBA team since.

But Jeremy Lin happened and I find myself watching NBA replays and post-game interviews again. And since that’s not enough to feed my curiosity, I start digging into non-sports articles and videos about Lin from his pre-basketball stardom too. The more I dig in, the more in awe I am of his story and its impact that’s so huge even non-basketball fans like me would  start watching basketball again; more so, how backsliding Christians would start coming back to faith (true story) inspired by him.

On a lighter note, I think my husband is happier because now he gets to watch basketball games AND spend time with me at the same time. You’re welcome, dear.

Here are some interesting Jeremy Lin stuff I’ve seen around:

+ You’ve probably seen him give tips on how to get to Harvard, but you should see his cameo in this Kevjumba video! My churchmates and I LOL-ed over these vids. My favorite part was when Jeremy was caught on video holding an iron, in bed!

+ In an InterVarsity interview, back in his college years, Jeremy answered questions about how his faith kept him grounded. It’s inspiring to see how solid his Christian disciplines are.

+ Ate Stef thinks Jeremy Lin’s story is one of hope, of never giving up through years of rejection, and rising above persecution and suffering. (My thoughts exactly, Ate Stef wrote it beautifully.)

+ Jessie Eissenberg shares awesome stories about how Jeremy helped him through tough times; and  how he offered to donate a kidney to someone he’s never even met.

+ John Piper quotes him. He says Jeremy seems to have his head on straight—and coming from The John Piper, that’s saying a lot.

When Paul wrote in Philippians to press on for an upward prize, he was living for that, and it made his life meaningful (Philippians 3:15). And I realized I had to learn to do the same. I had to learn to stop chasing the perishable prizes of this earth, I had to stop chasing personal glory, I had to learn how to give my best effort to God and trust him with the results. I have to learn to have enough faith to trust in his grace and to trust in his sovereign and perfect plan. I had to submit my will, my desires, my dreams — give it all up to God and say, “Look, I am going to give my best effort, go on the court and play every day for you, and I’m going to let you take care of the rest.”

~Jeremy Lin

+ Asked what his profession would be if he’s not a basketball player, Jeremy answered, “I would be a pastor. It’s something I think about doing when my playing days are over.” (WIN!)

Some says Linsanity is just a fad, some says it’s magic. I say it’s a story of faith, how God’s work is not confined within the four corners of the church, but goes on wherever He places His people. You see, I believe in a God who builds up not just small and ordinary people but successful and influential people as well; and He uses them to bring His message to a world that has somewhat stopped believing. This God we live for? He’s very strategic.

Knicks is losing to the Nets as I blog this, but this Linsanity has stopped being just about basketball and winning games for me now, and maybe for some of you too.

For the first time in my life, I watch NBA and see God at work there.

This Little Boy I’m Crazy About

Isaac is growing up fast! He’s turning 2 years old this week, and his Mom and Dad threw an advanced birthday party for him last Saturday. There’s something about balloons and little kids running around that makes my heart turn jell-o. You bet, Saturdays are made for these.

Isaac probably wouldn’t remember this day (I can’t remember how it was like when I was two years old!), but I’m sure, years from now, when he sees these photographs, he will know how much this family loves him!

They say you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. I’m so glad I didn’t have to choose mine because God already chose it for me. It’s not perfect, but I’m happy to be born into this particular one—big bones, chubby genes and all. And to make it even sweeter, our family has grown with 3 beautiful additions in a span of 3 years: the sisterthe husband, and my most favorite baby boy in the world who amused us all with his presence last Saturday.

Say hello to my beautiful family:

Isaac’s party did not have any specific theme to begin with, but the photographs remind me of balloons and flying houses. :)

We obviously couldn’t get enough of Isaac!

Kiddie party and balloons aside, tears freely flowed on my cheeks while I was post-processing that last photograph. It was a Sunday afternoon, day after the party. My husband was sleeping right next to me on the couch, rain was pouring down, and I was alone with my Lightroom, thoughts, and (day)dreams. It’s amazing how much love and joy can be captured in a single photograph, and how much it can awaken feelings you didn’t know you had.

Once in a while, God blesses us with defining moments that make the long, torturous waiting in between worth enduring. When you find yourself in these moments, savour them, preserve them in photographs, write them down, keep them in your heart. You see, life has a way of making you lose sight of your dreams sometimes, making you feel tired and impatient. So when that inevitable feeling of helplessness hits you, then you’ll know exactly where, and from Whom, to draw strength from.

I never blurted this out online before, but watching Isaac laugh, and run, and smile, and hug his Mommy and Daddy makes me excited for when my husband and I get to finally have our own little one. How awesome that day would be.

This made my day

This morning, as I was doing my daily rounds on Facebook, I found these:

Hello Isaac, you’re sooo kyot!! Ian Fornoles, thanks for capturing these photos! The best!

I can’t stop smiling! I mean, come on, how can you stop smiling with photographs like this? I want to squish my nephew’s cheeks and give him a biiiiiggg suffocating hug, the kind that’s soooo tight he starts crying haha.

I suddenly miss those days we live in the same house and I eat/drink/breathe babysitting and playtime for lunch and coffee breaks. And those little knocks on my door in the morning. And how he would laugh at his reflection in the mirror and then laugh harder because the boy in the mirror was laughing at him haha. And how he would say “aw-aw!” in response to everything you ask or say. (What does the dog say? Aw-aw! What does the cat say? Aw-aw! I love you! Aw-aw! Say bye-bye! Aw-aw!)

Haha I miss him!

Which reminds me, he’s turning 2 years old this week! Has it really been 2 years? Wow.

You’re growing up too fast, little boy! Slow down!

*All photos are taken by rising photography guru, Ian Fornoles.
Post-processed by me.  Just coz I had to chasingdreams-ify it. :D

Rachel, Joana & Me; and that Sunday afternoon at Harbour Square

It doesn’t feel like a long time ago when they were still kids.

And I say kids because it *once* felt like I was significantly older than they were, back when they were in grade school and I was in junior high. As part of the youth ministry in church, I was given the opportunity to be these girls’ Accountability Partner, or “AP” as we would still refer to each other until now.

A couple of years later, the age difference (6 years) does not feel too big of a gap anymore, and now, look at them! They look just like my age! Por que!

Random thought: I’m not sure what’s with me being in threesomes. There’s Me, Ivy and Olivia; and there’s Me, Joni and Mae. It’s like I can’t handle more than 3 friends at a time! Haha.

Anyway, I can’t get over these photos we took from Harbour Square a few Sundays ago. It was an impromptu thing, deciding to spend the afternoon together. This is exactly what I love about spontaneity—it’s usually the unplanned dates that actually push through!

They’re bloomiiingggg I know right, I feel like a mommy beside them! LOL.

The boys were with us too: that’s Paul (leftmost), my cousin-in-law who was visiting from New York; and that’s Noel (rightmost), Rachel’s fiance.

The husband was there, of course, but he was the one holding the camera most of the time.

I look 2 months pregnant in that last picture. Haha. #justsaying

I enjoyed everything that night was made of, but mostly I love spending time with these two girls. (Ehem, ladies.) They’re like my little sisters from another mother. I may have just picked their names from out of a hat, sure—being “assigned” to be their accountability partner a decade ago felt so random. And yet, God made this relationship bloom into this sort-of sisterhood that it is now. I love them, and I made it my lifetime commitment to always look after them.

It’s not every day you find yourself people who love you and respect you for who you are; I’m happy God blessed me with these friends, generation gap and all.

Hello, I’ve been scrapbooking

I take a lot of photos (you know that already), and sometime ages ago, I got hooked with digital scrapbooking too. But lately I enjoy doing traditional scrapbooking again. There’s something about putting together patterned papers, instant photographs, and library sticker labels that make me fall in love, in the same way I love keeping and writing on journals.

Here’s something I did last December. I wish I have more time doing non-digital stuff like these.

I love browsing through a completed scrapbook project, but the process is long and can be really frustrating (because it takes time, something I don’t exactly have so much of.) You know what I’d really like to have in the Philippines right now? I want Project Life to be available in local art stores and specialty stores here. Is that even possible, Becky Higgins? I could really use a hassle-free way of preserving photographs. Project Life would have been a breeze. :)

Oh well, in the meantime, I make use of whatever we have in this side of the world. Here’s what’s inside my little scrapbook project:
