Our darling fashionistas sporting their new sunnies.

Guess there was no need to say good bye to summer here in the Philippines! It may be the monsoon season now, but it’s good to know that there will always be warm sunny days all year round.

CAPTION THESE!

I don’t know if Rain being born 2 minutes ahead of Dawn any indication of what their personalities were going to be like. Even though it’s just 2 minutes, Rain seems to be the one who acts more like an older sister, while Dawn seems to be the more playful, carefree one. Exhibit A, these photographs above. If you’re confused, Dawn is the one whose face looks like she’s planning something schemy, and Rain is the one smacking her head at her sister.

These photographs were taken last week, just before Rain got the flu, and Dawn caught the virus from her sister. It’s been a crazy week of anxiously nursing two sick and cranky babies, on the week of our anniversary no less, and I’m just so relieved that the worst is now over. I have a separate post in the back burner for our recent ordeal with flu. For now, let’s just say, I’m so glad that we’re seeing those smiles on their faces again.

Having twins is just.. beyond me. If it isn’t obvious enough, we so love being parents to these two!

Three Years Ago

Three years ago today, we were about to come home from our honeymoon, excited to start our life together. Wow. So much has happened since!

Every once in a while (and by “a while” I mean “a year”), I like having an excuse to relive memories from our wedding day and go through old photographs. And what better time to do that than now, yes? Besides, my Timehop has been bursting with wedding posts this whole week!

So bear with me for this photo dump of sorts, I can’t help it! It’s that time of the year. :)

The truth is, even though our wedding day was one of the most special, much-awaited events of our lives, I don’t really remember a lot of details from that day. It was as if I was placed inside a bubble where it was just me and David, and everything else faded in the background and nothing else mattered.

In retrospect, it’s good we had someone else taking photographs that day, without which we probably wouldn’t have a recollection of what was happening outside our little bubble!

It was such a happy day, and at that point we didn’t think anything can top the happiness that we felt and the joy in our hearts. We were proven wrong, of course, because three years later, God is still giving us reasons to be even happier (and more in love) than we were a year ago. :)

Our wedding is Josiah’s Catering’s Wedding Throwback this week. Check it out!

Remember this 30 Day Blog Challenge? It feels good to look back.

Love Comes Tumbling Down

David and Rhiza - Prenup

David and Rhiza

Dear David,

Do you remember that day? We ran around the old Philippine Air Force museum grounds with our small crew of 3, cramming our prenup video. We had to be quick because the sun was about to set that day and we didn’t have a lot of days left. Our wedding was less than a week away.

Do you remember that day? We were grinning from ear to ear, couldn’t keep our eyes off each other, couldn’t contain our joy. We awkwardly posed where they told us to pose, jumped when they told us to jump, chased each other when they said we should, smiled for the camera till our cheeks hurt.

Do you remember that day? We were so happy like we were living in a dream, except that our eyes were wide open and you’re, well, for real. And while we knew then that the best was still yet to come, we still couldn’t have guessed what God had in store for us!

Do you remember that day?

It’s been three years since then. So much has changed and so much has remained the same (we still chase each other around and smile til our cheeks hurt, that’s for sure). But in the midst of the big and small changes, the good times and bad times, you still remain to be the boy who makes my heart sing.

Thank you for being a huge part of the happiest days of my life, and even the ordinary ones. You’re my most favorite blessing. A lifetime thanking God for you is not enough.

Happy third year anniversary!
I love you, don’t forget.

Love, Riz

Madison’s Bistro Moderne Double Date

Our friends Rachel and Noel have been inviting us to Madison’s Bistro Moderne since it opened early this year, but it wasn’t until last week that we found time to go. As appetizers were served and I munched on this thing they call “Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse”, I wondered why on earth we waited this long to try out Madison’s!

Madisons Bistro Moderne

Madisons Bistro Moderne

Madison’s Bistro Moderne, though it looks more like a fine-dining restaurant, is actually not one. They were very specific about going for a “casual” experience more than a fine-dining one, hence calling it a “bistro”. In spite of the posh interiors, anyone can come in and enjoy good food here, even while wearing slippers or shorts. (Yes, no dress code!) However, it may be wise to make reservations because the place is almost always jam-packed!

Don’t be surprised, also, if you find yourself sitting next to a high-profile persona as you dine at Madison’s. Case in point, Pops Fernandez and her friends entered the bistro and took the table next to ours. Why, hello there, do we know each other?

Moving forward. I feel the need to reiterate that describing food is not exactly my blogging forte, so don’t expect a professional-sounding food review. What I do love is keeping tab of my food trips, taking photos of food, and places, and interiors.. and making memories with people I love.

That being said, here are photographs of what we ordered!

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse

Appetizer: Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse
Truffle Scent, Apple Mustard Chutney

—Can I just say, I can eat this Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse the whole day and still want more. First impressions last, and as the first dish served to us, this appetizer really did make a huge first impression! You. MUST. Order. This. When you visit Madison’s Bistro. I insist.

Madison's Bistro Moderne

Pan Seared PolentaSausage in Tomato and Cheese Sauce

—This one is not yet in the menu so we played a little game called “Guess What’s In This Dish”. We got the sausages and the tomatoes right, no sweat, but that white thing was a little tricky. We guessed potato, or bread, or some kind of pastry, only to find out from the chef that it’s actually.. cheese. I love it when something tastes soooo good but you don’t know what it is.

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Confit Pork Belly

Main Course: Confit Pork Belly
with Potato Gratin, Braised Balsamic Lentils and Thyme Jus

—My order, they say, is a best-seller, and I found out why. The serving was huge (I was so full after this one), and the pork was so juicy and tasty I don’t think I’ll ever eat pork the same way again.

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Braised Lamb Shank

One of their best-sellers: Pan Roasted Duck Breast (Bud and Rache’s orders)
with Orange Sauce, Caramelized Cauliflower, Bacon, Potato Gallette and Asparagus
—This one is not for the faint hearted. :)

Noel ordered a plate of delicious looking burger sliders with side fries, and I remember taking a picture, but I can’t find it in my phone, which makes me think that someone (most likely a little girl below 2 years old) played with my phone and accidentally deleted pictures. Guess who.

Anyway. I’m a dessert person, the total opposite of my husband who’s not very fond of sweets. So you can imagine my giddiness when these were served:

Panna Cota – Vanilla with Strawberry Consomme —to die for!

Madison's Bistro Moderne - PISTACHIO. Mousse tart with mascarpone cream

Pistachio – Mousse Tart with Mascarpone Cream
—this one is Rache’s order, but she let me taste it too and it’s soooo good.

The best part of the night, I have to say, is catching up with Noel and Rache. You probably remember them from this post, except that they’re married now. I haven’t been seeing these two a lot, but I love how we can always pick up where we left off.

Noel and Rache

Us

I knew Rache since when she was a little girl, and I love how we, together with our (sanguine) husbands, find ourselves on the same page now, able to talk about married life, and career, and businesses, and music, and love, and God, and faith, in a level that not many people will understand.

You gotta love great food and great conversations, and that night we were full with both. :)

Madison's Bistro Moderne, Mandaluyong

Full disclosure, Noel is a partner at Madison’s Bistro Moderne, and we celebrate with them for finding fulfillment and success in their married life, their business ventures, and their leaps of faith. :)

So yay, friends, go ahead and visit Madison’s Bistro Moderne! I guarantee you’re bound to find something you’ll eventually crave for from their menu, but promise me you won’t forget to order that Speck and Goat Cheese thing. Pinky swear.

A little shout out to my partner-in-crime—my runner and assistant, the twins’ referee and creative director, the reason behind Dawn & Rain’s smiles (and mine). Thank you, D, for your patience and enthusiasm, even though we drive you crazy sometimes. You’re awesome.

Do you know that the world celebrates “Twins Days”?

That’s right, it’s “Twins Days“, plural, because, as they say, “each twin needs her own day.” It’s an annual festival that happens on the first weekend of August, every year, at Twinsburg, Ohio. A tradition that began in 1976, the Twins Days Festival is dubbed as The World’s Largest Gathering of Twins, and has attracted thousands of biological twins—identical, fraternal, even triplets and quadruplets—of all ages, from all over the world.

I didn’t really know such festival exists until today. I just spent the past hour reading about the festival, amazed that somewhere in Ohio, people actually celebrate this curious case of twindom in such a huge way.

I came across this special Huffpost Live episode which featured 3 adult biological twins (2 of them identical, and 1 fraternal), and I watched all 16+ minutes of the episode with such fondness and excitement and curiosity. In fact, I watched it twice.(I’m a mom of twin, I’m excused to watch it twice! Lol.)

If you have 16 minutes to spare, go ahead and watch it:

I’m over the moon watching these 3 sets of twins, all grown up, talking about how life was/is like for them. I find the story of Kaitlin and Alexandra interesting, the fraternal twins in the video above, since Dawn & Rain are also fraternal twins who don’t really have a lot of physical similarities.

They all laughed about how fraternal twins sometimes have to fight for their right to twindom, unlike identical twins who undeniably look like twins. I wonder if Dawn & Rain would proudly fight for their right to being “twins” someday too.

I know every set of twins is different from the others, but listening to adult twins, it’s nice to get a picture of how this could transpire for Dawn & Rain as they grow up. I’m so excited for them! :)

The fascination never ends

Many people are intrigued by twins, how it’s like to be one, to have one. I myself get asked all the time how it’s like to be pregnant with twins, to birth them and raise them. But I think what’s even more interesting than birthing twins is being a twin.

#HPLTwins

To grow up knowing that you shared a womb with another person, and at one point you wore the same clothes and shared the same bed. That even though you eventually live separate lives, or take different courses in college, you know that you’re connected to someone in a way only twins will understand.

What really warms my heart hearing from the HuffPost video is that special bond shared between twins. I remember blogging about this before, how fascinating it is that they’re together since day zero, and that they will always have each other.

What a brilliant and wise and awesome God we have for creating twins.

I’m still amazed. I think I will never stop being amazed.

Hooray to Twins Days!

29/52: Who Do You Share Your Mcdo BFF Fries With?

Photographs of my daughters, every week, once a week, this 2014. Week 29.

29/51

Dawn goes, “I’m eating, no pictures please.”
And Rain’s like, “Don’t touch my fries.”

We tried it, my husband and I, to finish one order of BFF fries, just the two of us. We couldn’t finish it. There were some leftovers, and I felt like I gained 5 pounds after, which was horrible. I must have vowed never to order BFF fries again, until a few weeks later, when we found TWO valid excuses to order BFF fries.

Yep, these two french fries monsters!

29/52

29/52

We try to keep their french fries consumption in moderation, of course. But sometimes, we just can’t help it. We have to order french fries! Ordering french fries means we can let them eat on their own, minus the gooey mess, while my husband and I finish our burgers in peace. Hello, Mommy and Daddy’s new favorite place!

29/52

29/52

It doesn’t feel like a long time ago when I celebrated my 25th birthday with a McDonalds Kiddie Party. Or when my husband and I went to McDo one Saturday afternoon just to get caramel sundaes. And now? Now we’re taking our daughters to that place.

At the risk of sounding like a McDO groupie, I love the thought that McDo gets to keep small pieces of everyone’s memories and milestones just by serving us some burgers and fries.

It used to be just the two of us eating sundaes and fries at McDonalds, and now we have these two little girls sharing our McDo BFF fries with us. I know it’s nothing grand, this double scoop of fries; but we all know that at the end of the day, it’s simple joys like this that keeps us going. ;)
