Share Movement’s Mission, and an Invitation

sharemovement

This is exactly what I mean when you do work that matters—it doesn’t stop at serving your family’s needs, it goes further into helping communities and building lives for God’s glory.

When I met Jam Pangilinan (Founder and Director of the Share Movement) early this year, I was surprised to see someone so young who cares enough about, not just her own dreams, but also the dreams of the young children in the country’s urban poor communities.

I was immediately on board Share Movement’s mission, and this is why.

I wish you all have met my Dad :)

You see, my Dad (Pastor Bob or Kuya Bob to others) lived his life with so much passion for the urban poor community. He took street kids in, placing them in a shelter inside our small church in Manila. I remember times when he would take me and my brothers to walk around the University Belt, scouting for street children! When we came across some, he would share the gospel to them, invite them to our church’s feeding program and then later on, allow these children to stay in if they want.

We would start referring to them as “shelter kids“, no longer “street kids” as they once were. Our church would raise funds for the daily needs and the education of these kids. When funds were scarce and circumstances were challenging, our church did its best to keep them. Some of these children stayed for the long haul, completed their education and reconciled with their families. A few even became pastors! I literally grew up with these kids. They were our playmates and friends. They were our extended family.

My Dad got our whole church on board this ministry, which I find rather selfless and heroic. I mean, it’s a beautiful thing to have the heart for missions, another entirely huge thing to inspire and encourage others to take part and to experience the joy themselves.

He wasn’t only asking for help from our church community, he was also mostly sharing the fulfillment, the eternal joy, and the blessing that comes with extending your life and resources to bless others.  Continue reading “Share Movement’s Mission, and an Invitation”

Who Takes Your Couple Photos on Date Nights?

budriz1

budriz3

It’s our fourth wedding anniversary today, and it’s that time of the year where I give myself an excuse to browse through photographs and memories of the past years with David. I was going to apologize for the throwback photos and the ants and the cheese that have been all over our social media feeds all day, but I thought, hey, I’m not really sorry. :D (Sorry, not sorry!)

The web is our backup

Today as I was taking a trip down memory lane, I realized that, que horror, I lost (or misplaced) a big chunk of image files from years 2010 to 2013. I can’t remember where I backed them up or if ever I did! The lost files include photographs from our engagement, my New York trip in 2010, our Boracay honeymoon, our baby moon at Canyon Woods, and other special occasions in between.

The good news is, most of Dawn & Rain’s photographs are intact, thanks to that 52 Project! (Whew!) And as a consolation, we have uploaded a significant amount of these missing image files here on my blog and on social media. The upload-worthy ones. (Double whew!)

You know those times when people cringe at you for posting too many photographs and status messages on Facebook? Well, this is one of those moments I’m soooo glad I ignored those comments and posted photographs on Facebook anyway. Instant backup memory! I’m still wishing we locate those missing files, but if not, I’m glad we have Facebook (and this blog!) as back up.

On going to great lengths to preserve memories

The other night my husband and I noticed how we have stopped taking photographs of ourselves (and essentially stopped preserving memories) since the twins were born. Back then we would take so many photographs of us together—coffee dates, mall trips, grocery runs, random moments, even as trivial as making each other coffee in the morning or cleaning up the house—regardless if we’re posting them or just keeping them.

The past year, well, not so much.

Back then, I would go to great lengths just to preserve fleeting moments together. And I will never regret the times I did.

That said, would you notice that those photographs above were photoshopped?

Selfies are ok for memory keeping, as long as they come with descriptive captions. But I like taking photographs in context—the setting, what we wore, what we did—which a selfie can’t justify, and two people on a date can’t possibly do without help from a third person.

But of course, you can’t entrust your camera to someone who’s just passing by. In such a case, we like taking turns capturing each other’s photographs, within the same frame, after which I would merge them digitally.

Here’s how to do it, just so you get something actionable from this post:

  • It’s the same concept as cloning yourself in one photograph.
  • In our case, merging two photographs together, here’s how (except we normally don’t have a tripod, so we just make sure to take the photo from the exact spot.)

Make memories worth keeping, and preserve them!

Time flies, and there’s merit to preserving memories, whether through a blog post, a photograph, a journal entry, a twitter timestamp. I can’t count the number of times I relearned lessons, revisited milestones, or remembered God’s goodness through an old blog or some social media posts. Stuff I wouldn’t have remembered otherwise on an ordinary day.

I wouldn’t say go all out posting TMI on social media! I say, not too many details, just the essence of the memory, like the telling of a poignant story, in ways that would inspire and connect people (friends and strangers alike), while serving your own nostalgia.

Here are some bloggers who do storytelling and memory-keeping so well, if you want to be inspired—

My husband and I haven’t planned anything yet to celebrate today. He’s in school all day and I’m at home supposedly working, and I’m not yet sure how we would celebrate this day, except of course I know we will, and that there will be lots of photographs. (And maybe a little something special over the weekend too. ;) I can’t wait!)

Embracing Motherhood with Cycles and Cradle

Cycles Baby Laundry Detergent

I remember it like it was just yesterday, preparing for our twins’ arrival. Seven months into pregnancy, my husband and I started carefully disinfecting every nook and cranny of the house, and gently washing their first set of clothes.

As first time parents, ordinary tasks like washing baby clothes or hanging curtains in the nursery were sacred and emotional moments. We knew our lives were going to change forever, yet totally clueless about how much it actually would!

You can never be fully prepared for motherhood

The thing is, no parent saw it coming, how much love would overflow at the sight of a tiny baby you just met, how addicted you would be to the smell of your baby’s skin, or how much a little smile would change you, break you, wreck you.

Nothing would prepare you for the sleepless nights, the laundry that doesn’t seem to run out, the scare of a little insect bite or a low-grade fever, the endless packing and unpacking of the diaper bag, the crying, the feeding, the bathing.

The good news is, you get better at it somehow. You learn to decipher what your baby needs just by the sound of her cries. You know not to pack too many clothes or too many bottles. You know what brands of shampoo or laundry detergent to buy. You learn to deal with the bad days and make the most out of the good ones.

And you become appreciative of the fact that you don’t have to do motherhood alone. You get by with a lot of help from your family and friends, and from passionate brands who understand your need to give your children only the best.

Cycles and Cradle

Cycles and Cradle is in the business of partnering with mothers to give their children utmost love and care.

A company that was established by a meticulous and protective mother herself, Cycles and Cradle offers natural and innovative baby products—from laundry detergent to bottle cleansers, from baby wash and lotion to insect repellent and diaper cream.

We got our first set of Cycles mild laundry detergent products from our baby shower, three years ago, gifted to us by a seasoned mother who knew just what we needed to have as new parents. We’ve been using Cycles laundry detergent ever since, and just recently started using their baby skincare products under the new Cycles Sensitive line.

Proudly Filipino-made, Cycles and Cradle celebrates its 10th year anniversary this month, and we join the thousands of mothers and families whose lives were made better and easier by this brand’s commitment and vision to give our little ones only the best.

We couldn’t be more grateful.

Happy 10th anniversary, Cycles and Cradles! Thank you for being all around awesome.

100% Whole Mom: Branding & Passion Cards

wholemomph

When most of the hours in a day are spent hustling and working, you don’t only set aside your personal needs and dreams, you also start to feel uninspired and underwhelmed. Work becomes robotic, you start doing it just for the money, and you feel like you’re wasting your time on things that don’t have long-term value. That said, 100% Whole Mom couldn’t have come to me at a better time.

It took me out of the design rut and allowed me to do work that matters. Sure it required a couple of sleepless nights and about ten thousand revisions. (That sponsor card had to be revised over and over up to the last minute because sponsors just kept coming in!). But it’s projects like this, ones that have eternal value, that don’t feel like work at all!  Continue reading “100% Whole Mom: Branding & Passion Cards”

Sofitel Manila Staycation with Kids

We couldn’t have booked a staycation at a worse time. The weather was horrible, a typhoon just entered the country, classes were suspended, and many parts of the metro were flooded.

We got ourselves booked at Sofitel a few weeks ago, long before weather forecasts showed signs of a typhoon. We looked forward to take a dip in the pool, enjoy the outdoors, maybe even watch the sunset by the Manila bay. None of these were possible during our stay, and yet somehow our Sofitel experience couldn’t have been better still. It was a bed weather kind of week anyway, and staying in is definitely a good idea inside Sofitel’s luxurious guest rooms and indoor facilities.

The story of my life—everything worked out together for good after all.  Continue reading “Sofitel Manila Staycation with Kids”

Recently: The 100% Whole Mom Launch

100% Whole Mom

Chesca Kramer, Rica Peralejo, Marilen Montenegro

I can tell this story from two perspectives: First, from behind the scenes where I got to witness how this passion project came to life, from drawing board to launch date, from vision to reality. And second, as one of the many Moms who are (and will be) inspired and empowered by this passion project.

It has been such an honor to be in both sides of the fence, and I couldn’t be any more proud of the 100% Whole Mom ladies.

Rica, Marilen and Chesca

These women need no introductions! We watched them on TV growing up, and we all have seen them bloom from child actresses and teen models to influential women and moms. But what we couldn’t see from the other side of the TV screen or from the glossy pages of a magazine is how the Lord has been preparing them for something bigger than showbiz.

As mothers themselves, this passion to inspire and empower other moms has grown too big for their hearts to keep, and it was just so brilliant how the Lord brought the three of them together to make this vision a reality.

So after months of brainstorming sessions, Facebook messages and planning, 100% Whole Mom was finally launched, and it wasn’t like any other media launches. Mostly it was a special treat for us moms, a declaration of God’s work in us, and a celebration of motherhood. Continue reading “Recently: The 100% Whole Mom Launch”
