What’s Better than a Good Cup of Coffee?

Talk to me about coffee and dreams, you bet, I am so there.

Launched just this November, The Dream Coffee is a single origin coffee locally sourced from the farmers of TBoli, South Cotabato. “Wake up to the dream in your cup,” they like to say. The ultimate dream? To produce coffee with a dream-like taste, and to positively impact a growing number of farmer families in the mountainous communities of Tboli.

Let this be said. If there’s anything better than enjoying a good cup of coffee, it’s enjoying a good cup of coffee while making a contribution to another person’s dreams.

This is what The Dream Coffee is about. They directly trade and partner with 75 farmer families who are not only given livelihood but also training on coffee production and processes, as well as essential life skills like saving and financial management.

As a coffee drinker AND an advocate of pursuing passions and chasing dreams, The Dream Coffee hits it very close to home for me.

I personally know Iya Joson, owner and founder of The Dream Coffee. Two years ago, sitting across from her in our weekly Victory group Bible study, I remember observing Iya as she beamed with love for Jesus and a wide-eyed excitement for God’s Word. Even then I just knew that she’s meant to change the world!

I’m so proud of Iya for what she’s built, for her leaps of faith that made The Dream Coffee come true, and for her journey from being a beauty editor to an enabler of dreams.

There’s much to learn from her story and I took the liberty of asking her questions creatives (young and old) can find inspiration from.

Listen up, dream chasers, and take notes. ;)

1. What made you jump ship from beauty to coffee, from corporate to social entrepreneurship?

Tell us about that one moment when you know it’s time to leap!

IYA: “It’s funny. The changes in my career from being an editor to a brand manager to an entrepreneur never happened because I wanted to leave the industry where I was. I think I’m the type of person who likes to stay put in a place and space that she knows she’s good at, but the changes happened anyway, because I knew in my heart of hearts that it was simply time to move on.”

“I’m certain it was God orchestrating all of that! It was in January of this year when I just had an intense feeling of displacement in my gut—I knew I was meant to be somewhere else, even if it made a lot of sense just to stay where I was.”

2. Tell us what a day is like as an entrepreneur, in comparison to when you were a brand manager of a beauty brand.

IYA: “When I was both a beauty editor and a brand manager of a beauty brand, I was working for companies and that meant days spent working in an office, meeting people elsewhere, and attending or mounting events.”

“When you’re an entrepreneur, you have more leeway to dictate your own schedule. Leading up to our launch last November 15, I traveled a lot, on a couple of trips to T’Boli where the farmers we work with live, and also to other places just to get my mind to open up to the potential and possibilities of starting a new business. Now, I like to dedicate a couple of days a week to meeting people, and then for the other days, I’m either just at home doing all the glamorous things one does in a start-up—running bank errands, processing the orders coming in—or driving around to get deliveries of raw materials done.”

“Unlike in the previous jobs I held, now I’m hardly ever dressed to impress, in heels, or even in makeup. Those things are fun, but I also try to see the magic in doing every single thing in a business that’s just begun, no matter how small of a task it is. It’s also very exciting in its own way.”

3. What’s your advise to other young professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs who want to chase after their dreams?

IYA: “I want to be able to say, “Just do it,” but I think just going after your dreams point-blank isn’t all that there is to consider.”

“I think you have to get to a point where you can just be honest with yourself and really get to the core of why you want to go after a certain desire in your heart—because if it’s just to make a name for yourself, I don’t think that will get you very far, but if it’s to make an impact on others’ lives, then that’s a dream that could be worth your time and effort to chase.

“It’s so easy to build yourself up. But the world needs more people who aren’t only after seeing their own dreams come to life, but who are also more than willing to put in work that paves the way for other people to see the reality of their own dreams, too.”

“Another thing would be to build yourself up for success. Don’t pursue anything without excellence. And in my experience, a good way to do this is to learn, learn, and learn. Wherever you are right now, even if it doesn’t feel like the most fulfilling thing in the world at the moment, I truly believe you’re meant to be there and one of the reasons why is so you can learn something that will be so crucial to the plans God has written out for your future.”

4. Share with us a Bible verse that spoke to you in a special way during this process.

IYA: “There are so many! I’ve been extremely dependent on God and His Word throughout this whole thing. Actually, if you really want to build your faith up, start a business! Haha. But seriously, a recurring one would be:

“Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—a pathway no one knew was there!” (Psalms 77:19)

IYA: “It was a constant reminder from God that He is working on something new and different through The Dream Coffee. It’s a way of doing business without its own blueprint yet, but so long as He’s behind building it, we’re standing and working in faith to see His vision come to life.”

5. How do you like your coffee? :)

IYA: “Black. Especially when you’re drinking very good coffee, you don’t want to get anything in the way of that dream-like taste!”

Dream Chasers Series

This post is part of a special blog series where I feature passionate creatives, travelers and dreamers who have made a choice to chase their dreams and pursue what makes their hearts soar.

I believe in learning and finding inspiration from other people’s stories, which is what this series is all about. I hope that as we get to know these dream chasers’ lives and visions and challenges, we find valuable lessons and inspiration that will help us in our own journey.

Avon’s Pink Lipstick Collection

As a mother who works from home, you’d be surprised at the amount of lipsticks I spend money on. “It’s an investment, babe“, I half-jokingly say to my husband, who gladly supports my splurges anyway. (Note: Find a man who supports your weird and sometimes unnecessary obsessions, lol.)

In all seriousness, even though I rarely leave the house, these little magical sticks are just some of my daily essentials. Naturally, I don’t put on full makeup when I’m just at home—who has the time for that, really? But I do love swiping lip color everyday.

It’s an instant pick-me-upper when you’re feeling blah (or in Pinoy slang, loshang), it makes you look put together even when you only slept 4 hours the night before, and best of all, it doesn’t take a minute to apply. Plus, I love how I can choose lipstick shades depending on my mood for the day!

Avon seems to see this whole lipstick story the same way. With their recent Pink is For Every Pinay campaign, Avon offers more than just the prettiest shades of pink but swipes of confidence and beauty, for every milestone and everyday use.

This pink collection comes with both True Ultra Color (satin finish) and Perfectly Matte lipsticks.

My faves from the Avon True Color line, left to right: Discovery Pink, Sunny Pink, and Pink Dream.

And my faves from the Perfectly Matte shades: Pure Pink, Rose Awakening, and Mauve Matters.

For lipstick shades, I’m usually into nudes, browns, and corals, so I love that Avon’s pink collection has these new shades that I would normally pick and try on.

While I occasionally splurge on high-end lipstick brands, my everyday lipsticks are ones that I buy guilt-less! Proudly Filipino made, Avon’s price points are also made for Pinays. The Perfectly Matte lipsticks retail for P399 each, while the True Ultra Color collection go for P379 each. So yes, ladies, you can definitely get yourself several shades without the fear of breaking the bank!

“Beauty for a Purpose”

I grew up watching my Mom put on her favorite Avon lipstick. Decades later, I get to enjoy my own Avon collection too!

From then until now, Avon has always been passionate about creating quality beauty products for all types of Filipina, with price points for all types of Filipina. Avon has stood the test of time for a reason—the values that they stand for—which makes me appreciate their products even more. Why great job, Avon! And thank you. :)

PS. Ohh dear, did I just publish my first ever beauty blog post? Just thought I’d clarify that I’m not going that direction. ;) However, I may be creating beauty-related content every now and then, but only when it applies to mommy life and the work-from-everywhere creative lifestyle. That said, Avon sent me this thoughtful PR package and since lipsticks are just some of the little things that are part of my every day (hashtag mommyhacks), it inspired to write this post. Hope you enjoyed reading it!

PPS. I’m giving away some Avon lipsticks!! Check out my Instagram to know how to win. ;)

I Wish You All Have Seen Allegiance Broadway

My husband and I happened to have tickets to Allegiance in one of those rare nights Lea Salonga was down with colds and couldn’t make it to the show.

There was a bit of confusion, even disappointment, upon receiving our Playbills and seeing someone else’s name under “Kei Kimura”, the charming and fierce female lead who was supposed to be played by Lea. After all, I’m sure many of us Filipinos went to see Allegiance because of her. I saw many of our kababayans gathered in the lobby of the Longacre Theater before the show, whispering to each other about Lea’s absence.

But the show must go on and the disappointment immediately disappeared soon as Elena Wang, Lea’s understudy, took Kei’s spot on stage with remarkable confidence and grace, nailing it one scene after another. I was curious to see how she would handle “Higher“, a song that was composed especially for Lea, but oh my wow, Elena totally killed it and won me over.

She didn’t just “fill in” for Lea. She totally owned the role, and it made me happy to have witnessed just that.  Continue reading “I Wish You All Have Seen Allegiance Broadway”

What I Love About Begin Again

Delayed reaction alert! We just watched this movie two weeks ago, when it was actually in theaters back in July. It’s been a while since I last blogged about movies or shows I watched, but I’m absolutely hooked to this one I thought it deserves a post.

Keira Knightley and Adam Levine in Begin Again

Keira Knightley and Adam Levine in Begin Again

I have a thing for indie films like this one, although one may question the indie-ness of this film since the cast is kind of star-studded—Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, and Adam Levine. It was such a treat to see all three of them in one film. (2020 update: We didn’t know it back then but the talented kid who was Mark Ruffalo’s daughter happened to be Hailee Steinfeld, who also ended up becoming a big star in her own rights. Has anyone watched Begin Again past 2020? Say hello in the comments!)

Watching Begin Again reminded me so much of Once, which is why I wasn’t surprised when I later found out that it was, in fact, written and directed by John Carney. I knew it.

Have you seen it? You should see it! I mean, if you’re like us who have been out of the loop for a while, and maybe unaware that you missed out on a good film.  Continue reading “What I Love About Begin Again”

Dear Eraserheads, I Knew it Wasn’t the End

Eraserheads 2014

Eraserheads 2014

Photos from Eheads’ London tour, April 2014.

I knew it. The Final Set Reunion Concert in 2009 wasn’t the end. When you burned your Sticker Happy piano, took your final bow, and left the stage, I knew it wasn’t the end. When people started leaving the MOA grounds, and Raimund came back on stage, followed by Ely, Marcus and Buddy, and Ely shouted, “one for the road!”, and you guys sang three more songsI knew it wasn’t the end.

Somewhere on the pages of my old (embarrassing) Flickr account, I said, “I still believe that The Final Set is not the last.” And it wasn’t the last, indeed. I knew it wasn’t!

It just can’t be the end for you guys for me. You were like, part of the family. Your songs were the soundtrack of my college years, just like everyone’s.

I can’t wait to hear 1995 and Sabado. I can already feel it.

Love,
Riz

Eraserheads, Esquire September Issue

These things have been trending everywhere you go today: (1) Esquire’s September 2014 issue cover of Eraserheads, reminiscent to the Beatles’ iconic walk down Abbey Road (LOL at the truck in the background, the Beatles’ photo had a Volkswagen beetle in that same spot!). (2) An announcement of two new Eraserheads songs entitled “1995” and “Sabado”. And (3) September 4, this Thursday —the date when the two songs and the magazine will be out. #SAVETHEDATE

I hope we can spend more time together
A few hours is better than ever
If we could only make it longer
A whole day would be fine
A whole week would be fine
A whole month would be fine
A whole year would be fine
A decade would be fine
A century would be fine
Forever would be fine.

And that is how it begins to feel a lot like Christmas.

Madison’s Bistro Moderne Double Date

Our friends Rachel and Noel have been inviting us to Madison’s Bistro Moderne since it opened early this year, but it wasn’t until last week that we found time to go. As appetizers were served and I munched on this thing they call “Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse”, I wondered why on earth we waited this long to try out Madison’s!

Madisons Bistro Moderne

Madisons Bistro Moderne

Madison’s Bistro Moderne, though it looks more like a fine-dining restaurant, is actually not one. They were very specific about going for a “casual” experience more than a fine-dining one, hence calling it a “bistro”. In spite of the posh interiors, anyone can come in and enjoy good food here, even while wearing slippers or shorts. (Yes, no dress code!) However, it may be wise to make reservations because the place is almost always jam-packed!

Don’t be surprised, also, if you find yourself sitting next to a high-profile persona as you dine at Madison’s. Case in point, Pops Fernandez and her friends entered the bistro and took the table next to ours. Why, hello there, do we know each other?

Moving forward. I feel the need to reiterate that describing food is not exactly my blogging forte, so don’t expect a professional-sounding food review. What I do love is keeping tab of my food trips, taking photos of food, and places, and interiors.. and making memories with people I love.

That being said, here are photographs of what we ordered!

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse

Appetizer: Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse
Truffle Scent, Apple Mustard Chutney

—Can I just say, I can eat this Speck and Goat Cheese Mousse the whole day and still want more. First impressions last, and as the first dish served to us, this appetizer really did make a huge first impression! You. MUST. Order. This. When you visit Madison’s Bistro. I insist.

Madison's Bistro Moderne

Pan Seared PolentaSausage in Tomato and Cheese Sauce

—This one is not yet in the menu so we played a little game called “Guess What’s In This Dish”. We got the sausages and the tomatoes right, no sweat, but that white thing was a little tricky. We guessed potato, or bread, or some kind of pastry, only to find out from the chef that it’s actually.. cheese. I love it when something tastes soooo good but you don’t know what it is.

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Confit Pork Belly

Main Course: Confit Pork Belly
with Potato Gratin, Braised Balsamic Lentils and Thyme Jus

—My order, they say, is a best-seller, and I found out why. The serving was huge (I was so full after this one), and the pork was so juicy and tasty I don’t think I’ll ever eat pork the same way again.

Madison's Bistro Moderne - Braised Lamb Shank

One of their best-sellers: Pan Roasted Duck Breast (Bud and Rache’s orders)
with Orange Sauce, Caramelized Cauliflower, Bacon, Potato Gallette and Asparagus
—This one is not for the faint hearted. :)

Noel ordered a plate of delicious looking burger sliders with side fries, and I remember taking a picture, but I can’t find it in my phone, which makes me think that someone (most likely a little girl below 2 years old) played with my phone and accidentally deleted pictures. Guess who.

Anyway. I’m a dessert person, the total opposite of my husband who’s not very fond of sweets. So you can imagine my giddiness when these were served:

Panna Cota – Vanilla with Strawberry Consomme —to die for!

Madison's Bistro Moderne - PISTACHIO. Mousse tart with mascarpone cream

Pistachio – Mousse Tart with Mascarpone Cream
—this one is Rache’s order, but she let me taste it too and it’s soooo good.

The best part of the night, I have to say, is catching up with Noel and Rache. You probably remember them from this post, except that they’re married now. I haven’t been seeing these two a lot, but I love how we can always pick up where we left off.

Noel and Rache

Us

I knew Rache since when she was a little girl, and I love how we, together with our (sanguine) husbands, find ourselves on the same page now, able to talk about married life, and career, and businesses, and music, and love, and God, and faith, in a level that not many people will understand.

You gotta love great food and great conversations, and that night we were full with both. :)

Madison's Bistro Moderne, Mandaluyong

Full disclosure, Noel is a partner at Madison’s Bistro Moderne, and we celebrate with them for finding fulfillment and success in their married life, their business ventures, and their leaps of faith. :)

So yay, friends, go ahead and visit Madison’s Bistro Moderne! I guarantee you’re bound to find something you’ll eventually crave for from their menu, but promise me you won’t forget to order that Speck and Goat Cheese thing. Pinky swear.
