The Craft Central: Crossing Over from Virtual Shop to Physical Store

The Craft Central

My kind of place,” I thought to myself as I stepped inside The Craft Central. It’s one of those magical places where you can’t help but go through every single shelf, left to right, top to bottom, and you come out two hours later with bag full of art supplies and handmade products that will inspire you for weeks and months to come.

The Craft Central is not new to us, Manila-based letterers and artists. For the past year/s, we get our regular dose of calligraphy inspiration from their instagram feed, purchase our art and calligraphy tools from The Craft Central’s website, and chase them around whenever there are local art fairs and bazaars in town.

I reckon we all kinda knew that it was just a matter of time when The Craft Central would open a physical store somewhere! And then in September, it finally happened.

Such a good feeling to now know exactly where to go when your calligraphy ink runs out, or when you need to replenish your art stash, or when you simply need to be inspired!

Shopping from The Craft Central online is still a convenient option (and what an efficient online ordering system too, if I may add), but making a trip to Greenbelt 5 and into the doors of their shop brings this special kind of rush.

Stepping inside the store, surrounded by beautiful things made with love and skilled hands, you just can’t help but be inspired to create. To learn a new skill. To pursue those creative passions. To be brave and get your work out there for the world to see.

To do that thing you’ve always wanted to do.

Alexis Ventura, founder of The Craft Central, is a young entrepreneur and visionary who once dreamed of creating a haven for aspiring artists to showcase their work, hone a variety of skills, and to have access to supplies that used to cost so much because they had to be imported from outside the country.

It is worth noting that The Craft Central is one of the first movers in the local art scene here, bringing the art of calligraphy and brush lettering back, which essentially birthed a new generation of artists and creative entrepreneurs.

A leap of faith, the right kind of motivation and attitude, coupled with strategic business decisions, plus the courage to trust and follow God’s lead, brought The Craft Central to where it is today.

I asked Alexis to share some of the lessons she learned in her journey and here are some of the things she learned in this whole process.

1. Share with us one (or more) defining moment/s that affirmed to you that this is exactly what God is calling you to do.

My decision to pursue the business is a result of several months of prayer and inner struggles. Perhaps what calmed the storm were the verses I read on 3 specific occasions that I desperately asked for direction: Exodus 35:30, Deuteronomy 15:4, Psalm 105:37-45. I also waited for the blessing of my parents before I submitted my 3o-day notice, and it was a day that I remember to be so happy and glorious!

2. What’s your greatest fear when you were starting your business and how did you overcome it?

Failing is my greatest fear. But I am reminded that God who takes care of everything will take care of me. Whether I fail or succeed, that’s part of God’s plan. MY role at the start was (and still is) to trust and follow Him!

3. What advise can give you those who are struggling and dreaming of establishing their own creative businesses?

There is always space for those who are determined. If you don’t find one, then make space for yourself.

I have a feeling what Alexis shared sent the wheels turning in your head, too. ;)

Art and Sky: Taking God’s Lead and Pursuing a Passion Business

artandsky

“I just wanted to hoard washi tapes,” Jenny Trinidad-Carlos, owner of Art & Sky, would say. She was just hoarding art materials for her own enjoyment, but because she couldn’t help her business-minded self, she thought of a way to sustain her own passion—by creating a business out of it.

A Manila-based boutique arts and crafts store, Art & Sky sources washi tape, paper products, craft tools, and party supplies and sells them online. On top of this, Jenny also co-owns a real estate business called Brick & Click with her husband. She’s my cousin, by the way, and as someone who grew up with her and saw her early dreams of establishing her own business and doing what she loves, I couldn’t be any more proud and happy that she actually ends up living her dream.

That said, Jenny is one of the first people I talked to about establishing Pursuit Community in the Philippines. She’s a creative soul and an experienced business woman at the same time, and I just know that there is so much she can impart to struggling creative business owners about pursuing passions and how to make a living out of them.

And so we invited her to share her story at the Pursuit Manila Made with Love gathering, and her testimony has left all of us feeling inspired and empowered to take God’s lead and use our God-given gifts to pursue what He has called us to do.  Continue reading “Art and Sky: Taking God’s Lead and Pursuing a Passion Business”

Playtime Cakeshop: How to Build a Sustainable Business from Your Passion

Playtime Cakeshop

Here’s a quick trivia. In the very first Pursuit Manila gathering, when we had to work with a very small budget and weren’t sure yet if anyone was going to show up at all, Playtime Cakeshop sent us some of their specialty krinkles without expecting or asking for anything in return.

And well, if you’ve joined our gatherings or followed my blog recaps, you know that since then, yummy (and pretty!) pastries are always part of our gatherings (and flatlays!) ;)

What I’m really trying to say is, Playtime Cakeshop has played a special role in the early beginnings of Pursuit Manila, and I’ll always be grateful to Thessam, founder and chef, for her generosity. One can expect that someone who’s got a heart as generous as her must have a really humbling and inspiring story to begin with. And so today in our Dream Chaser series, Thessa shares the story about how she pursued her calling as a pastry chef and successfully built a brand out of her passion.

Saab and Meelo: On Loving Every Part of the Creative Process

This year I have gotten to know a lot of amazing moms who are rocking their creative businesses while also caring for their homes. As mothers, we know exactly what we want for our young children, and some of us are quick to address these needs and meet this specific demand in the market. In fact, many of these passionate family-centric brands came about because of the desire to do work that matters within the confines of home.

One of these passionate mompreneurs I happened to have met this year is Liza Esteban of Saab & Meelo. I met her as one of our sellers at the Pursuit Manila Fair, and have gotten to know her a little bit through our gathering last month.

Saab & Meelo has been in business for 4 years now, with Liza creating unique head pieces and accessories for little girls. I asked her a few questions about how she established and continuous to manage her business, alongside being a house wife and raising kids. Read on and start taking notes! ;)  Continue reading “Saab and Meelo: On Loving Every Part of the Creative Process”

Peachy’s Craft Shop and Polymer Clay Art

polymer-donutes

I came across Peachy.ph sometime last year, a blog about arts and crafts and motherhood and everything in between. When you visit her blog, you’ll immediately think, “oh wow, everything is so peachy!” and conclude that that’s probably the reason why the blog is called such. And then you learn that her name is indeed, Peachy, and everything starts to make more sense!

Personally meeting Peachy through Pursuit Manila and getting to know her a bit more is one of my unexpected blessings this year. One late night over Viber messages, I have gotten a glimpse of Peachy’s heart and I knew that I have gained myself a new friend. (Ashushu!)

More than the pretty little things you see in her blog, the arts and crafts supplies you find in her online shop, and the adorable polymer clay art that she creates, Peachy also shares her passion and experience to help others figure out how to start their own craft businesses.  Continue reading “Peachy’s Craft Shop and Polymer Clay Art”

Pottly N Tubby: On Creating a Business Inspired by Your Kids

Pottly n Tubby

Pottly n Tubby

Some of my fondest childhood memories include play houses I made out of blankets and a few strings. I remember taking my books and toys under the sheets and hiding there for hours! Remembering these experiences from my childhood, it was just natural that I would make forts for Dawn and Rain too, which, as early as 18 months old, the girls have surely loved.

There’s something about having their own “secret” place that fosters creative imagination among children. And as parents, we want to create an environment that will stimulate their young minds and give them memories they will remember forever.

Teepees, play tents and soft toys

Enter Pottly N Tubby and their unique items for the little ones and the young at heart. They create pillows, beanies and soft toys, and are best known for their custom-made teepees and play tents. These teepees are huge! I can imagine adults buying these for themselves.  Continue reading “Pottly N Tubby: On Creating a Business Inspired by Your Kids”
